This piece began simply—with colours that felt comforting and familiar, drawn from an earlier collage that lingered in my mind. From that foundation, a playful story unfolded. I imagined her—this dancer—gathering her friends, from birds in flight to a dapper cat riding a fish on a skateboard, ready to step boldly into a lighthearted world of whimsy and creative fun.The background is crafted from layers of my own gelliplate prints—textures I pulled by hand in the studio, merged like a patchwork quilt of colour and memory. I even designed a little repeat pattern inspired by those same hues, weaving it like a ribbon through the scene.
At its heart, this work is about giving ourselves permission to leap—lightly, joyfully—into imagination. It’s an invitation to let go of the ordinary for a moment and join me on this strange, sweet adventure, where surreal friends cheer us on and we can play, dream, and dance without care.
