How Today’s Social Media Trends Support Authentic Visuals
It’s tempting to think that Reels and flashy video content are the only way to be seen. Yes—they do tend to get reach. But reach is not the same as connection. And that’s a distinction many business owners miss. I had a bit of a search to see if there was any info out there to support my own viewing habits and thoughts and what I found was that according to Buffer
- Reels tend to outperform carousels and static image posts in reach, but not necessarily in deeper engagement (likes, comments, saves). Buffer (ok I know it is from 2024)
- Carousels and static photos often outperform Reels in terms of engagement rate (i.e. meaningful actions) because people slow down, absorb, and interact.
Also from a site called Avramify showed a benchmark in May this year that showed how Reels tend to lead in view-through rate (i.e. how many people scroll past), whereas photos and carousels win in engagement rate (i.e. how many save, comment, or like). AVRAMIFY
In short: The info I found replicated my own habits and thoughts that reels might get eyeballs. But authentic images—real faces, real places, real moments—get hearts. Now I know that you can pretty much find anything to support any view or opinion on google, but this reflects my social habits and many people I talk to, some in fact are getting turned off social media due to the bombardment of reels and video’s.
People are increasingly fatigued by “movement” content. Endless motion, fast transitions, viral effects—these overload the senses. Many are craving stillness, authenticity, a moment to breathe and connect. Tips for Making Your Visuals Authentically Yours
To help you—and to help me when I’m behind the camera—here are some guiding principles:
- Capture moments, not poses
Let your team do what they do. I’ll anticipate, observe, and capture. The natural laughter, the focused face, the hands mid-task—those tell your story best.
- Show the environment
Include the store layout, the workshop, the tools, the signage. Let viewers orient themselves and feel transported.
- Include the people
Customers, staff, the owner, the cat that snoozes in the corner—humans (and even animals) ground your imagery.
- Vary close-ups and wide shots
Close focus draws emotion. Wide frames show context and place.
- Keep your style consistent, but allow variation
A consistent tone or color palette unifies your feed. But don’t force every image into the same box—some candid, some detailed, some light, some darker.
- Refresh regularly
Your business changes. New staff, seasonal decor, new product lines. Refresh your imagery every season so what you show is current.
Updating the menu, the décor, the stock? Then update your content
Now while I say to keep it fresh and updated, all my shoots will incorporate seasonal content but also capture base images that can be used regardless of season, kind of like that core jacket that goes with everything – just good to have and a reliable “go-to”.
